  Transportation

By Air

Bordeaux airport is in Mérignac, 10km (6.2mi) west of the city centre and is a gateway to the South West of Europe.  The Bordeaux-Mérignac international airport offers flights to and from the main European cities and many connections with Paris.  It offers 30 regular destinations a day, half of which are international flights, as well as 24 charter destinations.

By Train

Bordeaux is one of France's most important rail transit points.  Gare St-Jean station is only about 3km (2mi) from the city centre at the southern terminus of cours de la Marne.  Destinations include Paris' Gare Montparnasse, Bayonne, Nantes, Poitiers, La Rochelle and Toulouse.  It is possible to come by train from almost everywhere.

By Bus

Buses to places all over the Gironde (and parts of nearby départments) leave from the Halte Routière allèes de Chartres (in the northeast corner of Esplanade des Quinconces) where you can find the schedules posted.  Citrame Aquitane runs most buses to destinations in the Gironde and has an information kiosk at the Halte Routière. The Eurolines office faces the train station.

By Car

You can reach Bordeaux from the North (Paris), South East (Toulouse) or South (Bayonne) by motorways A10, A62 or A63.  Leave the highway Bordeaux-Bayonne A63 at exit 22 to reach Arcachon.  And one can easily find the Palatium by following the downtown signs in Archachon on arrival.  Car rentals are available but can be pretty expensive, as most freeways require tolls.

Getting Around Bordeaux

Walking is perhaps the best way of getting around the city since the river provides a constant reference, and the landmark buildings make it easy to pick out your way. Also, sights and attractions in the downtown area are easily accessible.  You can get a cab from anywhere in the city.  And buses are also a convenient mode of transport here.
